Product Safety Policy

This policy sets out the procedures that The Department of Art: Prop and Costume House follows to ensure that all props and costumes for rent are safe for their intended purpose. We are committed to providing our customers with safe and reliable goods, and we take our product safety obligations very seriously.

This policy applies to all props and costumes in our catalogue, including but not limited to:

  • Baby goods (e.g., strollers, car seats, high chairs)
  • Children's toys
  • Electrical appliances
  • Furniture
  • Sporting goods
  • Tools

Nature of Our Rental Services

All items are rented as “props” or “costumes” and are rented for the purpose of being used as such in a dramatic production. This purpose may differ from the original intended use by the manufacturer.

All props are second-hand goods; are rented in “as-is” condition and are advertised as such on https://the-department-of-art-prop-and-costume-house.booqable.com/ through photographs and descriptions of size, colour, functionality, and any defects or imperfections.

Electrical items, tools, and all other items are hired as props only and not intended for use in manufacture, construction or DIY.

All electrical items even those ‘Tagged’ should be checked by an independent qualified electrician before their intended use.

Although we endeavour to ensure every item in our catalogue is in the best condition we can manage; The Department of Art: Prop and Costume House offers no warranty or guarantee, expressed or implied, for the actual serviceability or condition of said props.

Product Safety Procedures

The following procedures are followed to ensure the safety of props for rent:

  • All incoming products will be inspected by a staff member, both before and after purchase, to ensure that they are in good condition and meet all relevant safety standards. All products will be checked against product safety standards available from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) website. Any products that are found to be unsafe will not be catalogued. If the product is able to be fixed or altered this will be carried out and the product will be checked again.
  • Where applicable, rental props and costumes will be accompanied by clear and up-to-date warning labels and instruction manuals. Due to the nature of intended use (for dramatic productions), the labels may not be attached physically to the items, but will instead be clearly included in the catalogue description. Staff members will ensure that the customer understands the warning labels and instruction manuals before the handover of the props/costumes.
  • We are subscribed to both the product safety newsletter and product recall updates from the ACCC, and any props or costumes that have been recalled will immediately be removed from our catalogue.
  • Customers can contact us by email, through social media, or on our website to notify us of any product safety concerns, and are made aware of this when they place an order. If a concern is raised, a staff member will investigate the issue as soon as practicable. If the concern is found to be valid, the product will be removed from our catalogue. The customer will be notified of the outcome.
  • Records of all rental transactions will be kept, including the full list of props/costumes rented, the date of rental, and the name and contact details of the customer. This information will be used to track props and costumes and to contact customers in the event of a product recall.
  • All employees will be trained in the requirements of this policy.
